John’s journey with Judo started at the age of nine at Sportif Judo in West Lothian, under the coaching of Peter Gardiner. After turning 15, John relocated to Camberley Judo Clubs in Surrey in order to pursue a professional career.
From then, John trained and competed full-time for twelve years, representing Team GB at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and winning a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships.
In 2004, he retired from competing and moved back to Scotland to team up with his childhood coach and Sportif Judo, where he has been working since as a development coach helping young judokas fulfil their potential. In 2014, he began competing again, winning a Bronze medal for Scotland in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
