“Who is your female icon and what makes them iconic?”

I have two.  Hailing originally from Texas in America, I moved to Edinburgh about 15 years ago and I have been avidly following American politics and keeping an eye on the changing dynamic across the waters.  These last few years have seen a major shift within American politics, with women from all different colours, ethnicities, backgrounds, and socio-economic statuses stand up and say “something has to change, and it needs to change now! I want to be a part of this & I can make a difference.” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is absolutely one of these women and watching her start her grass-roots campaign running for the US House of Representatives for New York’s 14th congressional district – defeating a 10-term incumbent in what is widely seen as the biggest upset victory from the 2018 midterm elections in American politics, all while she waited tables and bartended as her main job in NYC. She took office in 2019 at the age of 29 years old & is the youngest member of the US Congress -this is when the average age of members of the US Congress is 57 years old – she is an absolute inspiration to women across the world! Seeing her stand up to the “establishment” and have her voice heard, along with other female members of the American congress called The Squad, I remain hopeful on what she and brave women such as her, will do for future generations.

And as cheesy as it sounds, my second female icon is my Mom, Sue Jordan.  A wife & mother with four kids, from a “as regular as they come” Texas-style family, my mom made the decision when we were still young kids in Primary School, to further her education and she wanted to go back to University to pursue her degree and a career in accounting.  And my mom absolutely rocked it!

As a full-time student, a full-time mother, and a wife, I remember entire weekends when she would be cramming for an exam, but she still had responsibilities with us kids and she would take me with her to the Public Library so that she could study.  I love to read. I love to learn. I love to know how things work and why they work in such a way and I absolutely credit the time spent with my mom at the Temple Public Library in our nearby town as being so formative to my thirst for knowledge and growth and leadership. My mom showed me that perseverance and hard work is key and that it doesn’t matter what obstacles you have in front of you, if you want something – you can achieve it.  My mom graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas after 4 years – being a full-time student, a full-time wife and a full-time mother and watching her work hard for her dreams has inspired me to be brave – which resulted in me being quite young, finishing University myself and wanting to embark on my own, to travel across the Atlantic and it landed me here in Edinburgh – now surrounded by so many other inspiring women within the Watermans Team and within the Edinburgh Property Industry itself, specifically with the Edinburgh Pro-active Property Group (EPPG) that formed in March 2020 with 5 women all working at competing Solicitor Estate Agency Firms – banded together to share knowledge and ideas about the obstacles that faced us as a result of Lockdown in Scotland.

How has your industry changed over the years?

The Scottish Property Market is also beginning to see more women taking bigger leadership roles as Property Directors, Solicitors, Partners, Head of Estate Agency or Property Sales, Operations Directors, Marketing Directors – all to the betterment of the full and comprehensive service that we can offer to buyers and sellers across Scotland.  Women have started to band together on social media groups – which have become major influencers in how homeowners choose their preferred solicitor estate agent when selling a property or buying a property. Facebook Groups such as Edinburgh Gossip Girls, Midlothian Ladies Club, West Lothian Women or East Lothian Ladies – were created for the sole-purpose of sharing information and content and recommendation and just supporting other women.

Being able to share with these social media groups the exciting things that Watermans Legal can offer to them with selling a property or buying a property or for Family Law matters – I know that we will continue to see women growing within the industry.
