Watermans Help Couple to Put Their Stamp on World's Oldest Post Office

Watermans conveyancing team helps couple to purchase world’s oldest post office

A Florida couple are celebrating today having completed their purchase of the world’s oldest post office – with a little help from our own Hamaad Khalid.

Located in Sanquhar, the post office first opened in the Scottish town in 1712, and new owners Barry and Mary Ford will become only the 17th operators of the business since it was first established.

The post office was put on the market in 2019 – and when a sale to another buyer fell through, it looked as though the doors may have to close permanently on the historic business. Enter – Barry and Mary Ford. The couple jumped at the opportunity to relocate from the Sunshine State, where they have been living and working for the last twenty years.

Hamaad Khalid, senior solicitor in our conveyancing team, assisted the couple with the legal side of the purchase, and said that the whole process was straightforward.

“The previous purchase had been ongoing for a couple of years and unfortunately fell through. However, when Barry and Mary Ford came along, we were able to complete the legal process smoothly. This was helped by the fact that the clients were proactive and very easy to work with – it’s awesome that their story has made the headlines, and that the post office can continue to operate.”

We love a good news story here, and wish the couple the very best in their new venture.
