Community Sweet Community - Locals Swoop Up Arran Hotel

Exciting times for the North Arran Community Benefit Society who, with the help of Watermans, have recently purchased the Lochranza Hotel on Arran. Lochranza is Arran’s northernmost village and home to the famous Arran Distillery. The Hotel closed its doors in September 2021, leaving Lochranza with no hotels left. The community, feeling the effects of the business’ closure, came up with a plan. They initially showed interest in purchasing the property back in November 2021. Later they were awarded £483,643 to take over the business by the Scottish Land Fund.

Chris Traill, Chair of the North Arran Community Benefit Society, said:

“With this support, we hope to get the business back on its feet and provide a fantastic resource for many years to come.”

Mairi McAllan, Minister for Environment, Biodiversity and Land Reform, added:

“Communities know best what’s right for them including when it comes to the ownership and use of local land and buildings. With support from the Scottish Land Fund, which will be doubled to £20 million by 2026, more communities across Scotland are taking ownership of local assets – helping to create jobs, mitigate climate change, and tackle social isolation and loneliness.”

According to Visit Scotland, Arran saw 742,000 overnight visitors, 10.4 million day visits and £604 million spent by tourists in 2019. The community will be hoping to get a slice of that pie when they reopen. The group aims to operate the hotel as an inn with a bar. They’re also keen to create a community space to provide a safe place for travellers and locals to mingle.

The Lochranza Hotel picked up a lot of attention while on the market with its 12 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and stunning views. It even made an appearance on the popular daytime TV show This Morning in November 2022.

The Watermans team loved being part of this heart-warming story and with several more listings, we’re starting to really feel part of the Arran community ourselves. Keep your eyes peeled for the grand reopening, there’ll be plenty of Arran Single Malts enjoyed that night, that’s for sure!
