Inverclyde Crowned UK's Most Affordable Spot for First-Time Buyers

The Scottish council area of Inverclyde has been established by Nationwide as the most affordable place for first-time buyers in the UK.

A recent affordability report completed by the building society noted considerable variation in affordability in regions across Britain, with the north of England and Scotland coming out on top as the most accessible areas for first-time buyers to get on the property ladder.

In what is good news for buyers, the report has determined that property affordability has improved across all regions in the UK over the last year, using key metrics like house prices and earning data to give a broad overview of the price of property by region.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, areas to the south including Chelsea and Kensington were confirmed to be some of the most expensive, with a 10% deposit on a typical first-time buyer property costing in excess of £45,000.

Inverclyde: A first-time buyer’s dream?

According to Nationwide’s report, buyers in the Inverclyde area of Scotland can secure a home for just 2.3 times their annual income, with sale prices for typical first-time buyer properties averaging around £100,000.

The council area is popular with locals and tourists alike, with dramatic panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde to be enjoyed along the many coastal walks and viewpoints offered in the area. There is plenty more to do if you like the outdoors, with Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park a scenic choice to cycle and hike around at the weekends, and proximity to the Scottish Highlands making it an ideal base for an adventurer. Finlaystone Country Estate, located just outside Port Glasgow, is a popular spot for woodland walks and picnics on a sunny day, too! For lovers of the arts, Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock is a contemporary theatre and arts centre where you can enjoy regular events, plays and and exhibitions.

Regular ferries operate from towns in Inverclyde to Dunoon in Argyle and Bute, Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, and Kilcreggan on the Rosneath peninsula, where you can enjoy a day trip with views across the Clyde.

Employment opportunities in Inverclyde

With strong historic links to industrial shipbuilding and maritime trade, Inverclyde currently has a population of around 80,000 people spread across the key towns of Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock, and more southerly coastal towns like Inverkip and Wemyss Bay.

Although traditional shipbuilding in the area has declined in recent decades, both the local and UK Governments have been active in their focus on regeneration and population recovery, with plans in place to restore Inchgreen dry dock in Greenock expected to attract marine and engineering businesses.

Local Government in Inverclyde is also keen to focus on promoting tourism, with plans in place to highlight the vibrant towns and villages in the area including improvements to town centres, cultural venues and waterfront developments.

If you need to commute for work, Inverclyde borders the council areas of North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire meaning it is also well situated for those travelling to and from Glasgow. Train journeys from popular towns Inverkip and Greenock take less than 45 minutes to the city, making the area a commuter haven.

Is now a good time to buy my first home?

Following recent heightened conflict in the Middle East, potential homeowners are faced with uncertainty amidst changing market conditions. The Bank of England did not make any changes to the UK’s base rate of interest last week, freezing it at 3.75% in the wake of the geopolitical uncertainty which at a first glance is good news for first-time buyers thinking of getting on the property ladder. However, lower or maintained interest rates may mean more competition in the market, which could in turn push up the price of houses across the board.
